No on SB 939!  Time to Take ACTION

Putting a “Full Court Press” Into Action

By now, this bill is well known by all NAIOP SoCal members as well as the entire commercial real estate community in California as one of the worst bills we have ever faced.  SB 939 pits business against business and interferes with lease contracts by giving tenants the ability to walk out on their leases and pay nothing.  Hard to believe, but true.

As this is being written, your legislative affairs and political action committees have sent out four Action Alerts to our members, contributed to help fund an extensive communications effort, held an informative webinar in addition to working to bring very important business coalition partners in our region to oppose SB 939.  The response has been overwhelming in the united fight against SB 939.

This effort is on-going and is being supported by NAIOP Corporate’s Call to Action

We appreciate that everyone is busy and we do not do these calls to action unless your help is absolutely needed.  If you have not yet responded, it is not too late.  Please respond to our requests.  It does make a difference.  Thank you for supporting your chapter’s legislative efforts.

*Thank you to Majestic Realty Company’s Fran Inman for continuing to remind us of the importance of implementing a “full court press” to defeat SB 939!

Split Roll is on Our Doorstep

Another familiar topic to NAIOP members is “split roll.”  We have been successful in putting this battle off for years, but now it is a reality.  It will appear on the November 2020 ballot disguised as a measure to support education.  NAIOP’s Sacramento representative, the California Business Properties Association, with the support of its many commercial real estate members including NAIOP, ICSC and BOMA is taking the lead along with many other California business leaders and organizations.

The committee that has been set up to fight this measure is Californians to Save Prop 13 and Stop Higher Property Taxes.  We can defeat this measure and the destruction of Proposition 13 and attack on commercial real estate, but it will take everyone standing together to take the following actions:

This is every commercial real estate property owner’s battle and everyone’s contribution is needed no matter the size.  It will be used to protect your investment.  This is the time to make a contribution.  As a suggestion on the amount of contribution to make, the campaign to defeat Split Toll has created a calculation worksheet to help you assess the impact on your property and to recommend a contribution amount.

Once you have made the determination on your contribution, you may contribute directly to the campaign (Click Here to Contribute!) effort or to your NAIOP SoCal Issues Political Action Committee (Click Here to Contribute!)
